As I walked back into my HOMTV office on the day of 9/11, a former colleague of mine pointed at the television set tuned to CNN and stated a plane had crashed into one of the two towers. My heart told me otherwise, I swore it was a terrorist attack as soon as I saw the image on the screen. I had that sinking feeling it was really bad because my husband, (fiancé at that time) flies thousands of miles a year and that sort of thing just doesn’t happen. But when that second plane flew into the other tower, I knew in my heart of hearts it was terrorism and I didn’t know where my fiancé was.
I can’t imagine how long loved ones waited for a call that never came. I can’t imagine how hard it was for those who got a call from their loved one that they were safe and then never returned home. I can’t imagine how hard it is to lose a loved one and not have them ever return home. My heart reaches out for those who have had to endure this.
I recently watched an ESPN Outside the Lines: Man in the Red Bandana feature and tears just streamed down my face for the 9/11 victims like never before. I am not a New Yorker. I do not have family there. I have never lived there. I have only been a visitor. But I am an American and more importantly a person and my heart still sinks for the lost loved ones and family members. That day is forever burned in my heart. As I reflect upon that day I pray for all those who lost loved ones, lost their livelihoods, and are coping.
My husband and I celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary this past August.
